Public and private collections

In addition to his paintings, Knuttel became a prominent figure in Irish culture through his commercial collaborations. These projects, along with his ceramic collections allowed his work to reach a very broad audience. Knuttel’s work is held in both public and private collections worldwide. Collectors include Robert De Niro, Sylvester Stallone, Bertie Ahern and Joanna Lumley as well as Swiss Bank Corporation, Allied Irish Banks, Goldman Sachs International and Saatchi & Saatchi London. Knuttel's commissions include paintings for Sylester Stallone, The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party for the Irish Hospice Foundation, BMW's Mini Cooper, and most famously the Taoisigh of Ireland.

Painting of twelve men dressed in brown suits and black hats, standing in front of a blue window, with somber expressions.

Taosigh of Ireland

In 1999, Knuttel was commissioned to paint each Taoiseach of Ireland since the founding of the state. It was his Millennium Project. Knuttel always had a healthy disregard for politicians and so set about this task with gusto! There is little pomp and less splendour about their depiction. For a scholar of Irish politics there are many references to these gentlemen’s follies and idiosyncrasies contained within these images. At a reception in Dublin to launch the collection a number of them turned up to see their portraits. The results were not quite what they expected. As old Mr Liam Cosgrave headed for the exit, he commented to Knuttel “We weren’t ALL Gangsters you know!”
